hiredis has proven to be very stable and apparently has no portability issues.

My primary concern is that when upgrading node versions, native code modules OFTEN need to be recompiled, but not always, and npm doesn't notice or take care of this. As long as we have this issue, I think it's better to have hiredis be optional.

Sadly, this still appears to be the case with node and npm. Upgrades of node break native code modules in mysterious ways.

If you need performance, you want hiredis, but then you'll be exposed to upgrade-related pain.

IMO in the readme, you should state this as the real issue, instead of portability.
