If you have set up your own NPM server (sinopia or otherwise) on HTTPS, NPM itself is hardcoded to only accept the npmCA cert and their new globalsign CA. To override this, add ca = "" to disable cert checking or ca = "-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----\n............\n-----END CERTIFICATE-----" (with your CA's public cert) to your ~/.npmrc with \n's instead of actual newlines.
