@rmbolger Thanks for the reply! After playing with it for a bit after submitting the question I also did something similar to get the results I'd like

$dnsServer = "8.8.8.8"
$fqdn = "api.monitor.azure.com"

$DnsQuery = $(Resolve-Dns -NameServer $dnsServer -Query $fqdn)

# A Record Response(s)
$($($DnsQuery | Select-Object -Expand Answers) | Where-Object {$_.RecordType -eq 'A'}).Address.IPAddressToString

# CNAME Record Response(s)
$($($DnsQuery | Select-Object -Expand Answers) | Where-Object {$_.RecordType -eq 'CNAME'})

I think your way is cleaner, I was just writing a one-off script to make it easier to diagnose/troubleshoot an issue with DNS Resolution within Azure. Great project, works awesome on PowerShell Core!

Hey @leshicodes, thanks for reaching out. Yeah, that Address method on the array weirdness is annoying but there are ways to workaround it. Another part of the problem is that your query currently returns multiple different object types (CName and A record) that have differing properties as you can see in your Select-Object -Property * output.

If all you care about is the (potentially multiple) IP addresses returned by the query and not any CNAMEs, here's how I'd probably do it.

Resolve-Dns -NameServer $dnsServer -Query $FQDNsToQueryFor  |
    Select-Object -Expand Answers |
    Where-Object { $_.RecordType -eq 'A' } |
    ForEach-Object { $_.Address.ToString() }
