When calling an unreachable outlet, there can be timeout delays of a minute or so. I'm not sure in which case that happens. Maybe when the machine is no longer connected to the isolated network, and therefore cannot refuse the connection.
Executing each remote call in a separate thread seems like overkill though. Maybe it's OK to just live with the timeouts in this case. Or else use a watchdog to kill and respawn the thread if a call takes longer than a few seconds.
