this looks pretty reasonable, though I suspect we may want to nest things a bit more, like
vmware:
vmc_connection_details:
...
vcenter: # or vsphere?
...
Something like that. It would probably be good to get more of the Salt core team to consider the question, too.

just as a reference - the correct place to get the information is from options (typically seen via __opts__ though __salt__['config.get'](...) would also be appropriate)
