Great question!
Ideally, the orderRank
value would be set on the translation.metadata
document, so the order is definitive for all translations, not just on a single language's version ... but that wouldn't be easy with this plugin since the desk preview for the translations documents won't help you identify each one.
Since the new internationalization plugin doesn't have a concept of a "base language" that becomes a part of your query's logic–not the data structure.
So __i18n_base
would need to be replaced with checking for a specific language value.
Your query would look something like this:

*[_type == "translation.metadata" && references(^._id)][0].translations[_key == $baseLanguage][0].value->orderRank,

I might suggest using select instead of coalesce so you only run this subquery if your top-level language isn't the same as $baseLanguage
from orderable-document-list.
