Since buildInfo
theoretically is able to extract any settings or tasks (as long as it's not recursive), it comes down to defining a task that returns incremental number. That involves storing the number in an ini/xml/json file and incrementing it when it's called.

I locally have an implementation that naively increments numbers every time:
private[this] def buildNumberTask(dir: File): Int = {
val file: File = dir / "buildinfo.properties"
val prop = new java.util.Properties
def readProp: Int = {
prop.load(new java.io.FileInputStream(file))
prop.getProperty("buildnumber", "0").toInt
}
def writeProp(value: Int) {
prop.setProperty("buildnumber", value.toString)
prop.store(new java.io.FileOutputStream(file), null)
}
val current = if (file.exists) readProp
else 0
writeProp(current + 1)
current
}
The problem with this approach is that when you cross build against multiple Scala versions, they are issued different build number every time. In a way it's good because they are technically different builds, but if you want to pretend that it's all identical because your code is the same you may want the same build number.
That'll require detecting source tree change etc, and I am wondering if this feature would be generally useful as part of this plugin.

Thanks, that will do the job well.
