An alternative is to implement the tokens provider using the semantic DB https://microsoft.github.io/monaco-editor/api/interfaces/monaco.languages.tokensprovider.html

I think the syntax highlighting is good enough. I'm just spoilt with semantic higlighting in IntelliJ, after having used vscode more recently it seems we just have to live with imperfect syntax highlight (unless tree-sitter saves us http://tree-sitter.github.io/tree-sitter/ )
