To keep your packages up to date install npm-check-updates.

npm install -g npm-check-updates

Identify out of date packages and update all the versions in your package.json.

ncu -u

Install the new versions of your packages based on the updated package.json.

npm update

I've managed to update Bootstrap from 4.1.3 to 4.2.1 (well I hope so!).
I've done it this way:

• run ncu -u command on your template folder to see which node modules need to be updated
• open the package.json file and change the version number of the modules accordingly
• run npm install command; if I well understand, this updates the node modules in your template node_modules folder
• delete all files inside the build folder
• run the gulp command; this will update the Bootstrap and the FontAwesome scss files inside the scss folder and compile a new app.js and main.css files in the build folder
