Hmmm. Interesting. I was going to suggest installing future. If you start python, you can't do "import builtins"?

One possibility is at the bottom of this thread. You might have a bad version of the future module installed somewhere. (Maybe in your $PYTHONPATH which possibly shouldn't be there?)

Sorry I should have mentioned that I'm ubuntu 20.04, so I never had to deal with $PYTHONPATH.

import builtins does work

I've run into this problem before, but I never figured out how i fixed it.

Fixed it using a virtual environment, you can close this issue now
