The answer is yes! For age models in particular, it makes sense to borrow more information across all site types. This needs to be changed before October.

in both DeDx branch commit 79b15c3 and inla-latent branch commit 5e83abd, smoothModel and LatentFieldModel now treat site and site-age interactions as random effects, and I'm seeing better model behavior. All other factors we're using now make more sense as fixed effects (often binary), but we may also use random effects for race, which has many categories when combinations are used.
