Why is this function even in the library?

@drj11 could you clarify your objection?
Also the code should really use a with statement on the NamedTemporaryFiles so that they get cleaned up even on KeyboardInterrupt or other exceptions.

I added got my scripts working by replacing "return xmldata" with "return xmldata.decode('utf-8')".
Without it, the script crashed because the text was a byte string without known encoding.
