I've added a new spinner and location in r1432, to be further improved.

I'm not convinced we can use it for non-threaded tasks though - maybe we can add a force-display/hide
method but we'll end up with flickers for short tasks, and there's no real way to separate out short tasks from
long ones as it depends too much on connection...

Marking this as implemented as Rowan has done a significant amount of work on adding the new spinner for all
major threaded tasks, which now works very well after the initial issues were resolved.
