This is partly a relict of an older design and doesn't make a lot of sense now. There's probably some marginal benefit of locality, but the locality problems in stages 2 through 4 would be best addressed by batching our work into saner units rather than attempting to futz around with awkward units.
I will experiment with a thicker tape and see if there is a noticeable performance hit. I expect not.
The other benefit of a thicker tape is that 56 bits left over after essentially a 'type' tag could hold quite a number of useful values in-line.

No major performance impact; there is a mild slowdown likely due to decreased memory locality but this would be easy to claw back. Change is quite simplistic. Done in:
