Jeremy and I have talke about both of those ideas, and may do one or the other or, maybe not, still feeling it out.
There is a way to shoot ships below. Ask the navigator to roll the ship. With the single turret on top of the ship, the weapons and navigation have to coordinate, gives nav a reason to use roll to tilt the ship so the gunner can reach his target, and gives a non-contrived reason for nav and weapons to cooperate. I kind of like that.
Remains to be seen where the most fun is though.
I also kind of like the two turret station idea, as it closely matches the tie fighter vs. millenium falcon scene in Star Wars. Not so keen on the single station dual turret with toggle as it kind of violates the spirit of this game that makes it different from all the other space games.

I'm going to close this issue as it's kind of working as designed. May or may not add an optional 2nd turret at some point.
