This may work if you check out from git, but it doesn't work for the tarballs, linked from the website,
chris@grey:~/nonworkspace/socket_io_server/lib/socket_io$ git submodule update --init --recursive
fatal: Not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git

Yes, you have to issue that from a cloned copy of the repo. I'm not particularly a fan of the submodules either because of this issue of dependencies not being automatically included in generated tarballs.
