I'm thinking this might be a good one-off tool instead of putting it in the CLI since it will require non-trivial parsing and/or an extra dependency.
Example:
$ echo zone_file > sl-import-zone --config=~/.softlayer
Adding domain example.com
Adding NS record for example.com
...
This libraries might help with the actual parsing of the zone file: http://www.dnspython.org/ or https://pypi.python.org/pypi/easyzone/1.2.1
from softlayer-python.
One more library: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/bicop
from softlayer-python.
I've actually been messing with this the past few weeks and have had some success adding it to the CLI without too much trouble.

So far I have gotten it to work on simple zone files without issue, I'll try it on some more complicated ones next week and see how it goes. But parsing this file with regex isn't TOO crazy.

Alright. I don't want you to turn into this guy when dealing with caveats: http://stackoverflow.com/a/1732454

Thanks, this mostly worked for me. Your regex didn't consider dashes in host name so demo-theme
and test-theme
where both parsed as theme
which of course failed in the import :-)
