If it helps frame the issue at all, I've got a sharded redis setup, so the simple "pick the first master" approach won't work for my setup. If there's a way to address this, awesome. If not then at least let's keep this in it's own recipe so folks with my sort of set up can skip it.

The idea would be that this would be disabled by default through an attribute, and only used when that attribute was set to true. This also makes it work "out of the box" for chef-solo users. I try to be conscientious when making decisions like this and never break the cookbook or force a decision like this on the user :)

No update on this particular item yet. However what I might recommend is writing a wrapper cookbook? So you would create a cookbook called
mycompany_redis
It would contain the logic for determining master / slave information, then it would simply set some node attributes before calling the main redisio cookbook.

Also I might add that the 2.0.0_WIP branch seems to be fairly stabilized and is probably worth trying out.
