What i have done in the past is something like so

default['cookbook_name']['options'] = Mash.new(
"Actual configuration name" => "configuration value"
)

Then in my ERB I just iterate over that hash outputting the proper format. If there are special attributes that need to be calculated in the recipe instead of the attributes file, I will usually create a hash in the cookbook, then merge the mash and the hash together. This allows for the user to still override these automatically calculated attributes if they please.

The only question here is, what do I do about supporting the legacy format? I could just bump the cookbook to 2.0 and call it a breaking change. I could include a library that just translates the old values to the new ones, and then use that library if the old hash exists and needs translation.

A bunch of options, not sure how I will handle this yet. I will probably hold off on this for a bit.
