We use option 2 and it works pretty nicely. Since you can specify multiple yaml paths, you can be clear that the dynamically generated YAML "wins" and avoid conflicts.

I'm open to UDFs, as long as we maintain the invariant that the entire state is held in memory and any operations against it are pure functions that can be cached. If it's a patch to this repo, that would work. If it's a path to grange itself you'll need to be more careful.
