Looking into this more, and there does seem to be a bug under it all!

I'm actually not sure if this is something we'd consider a bug or not — @trueadm would have a more informed view. The derived state in question is 'unowned', which means it's being created outside an effect parent, and this affects how it's calculated. Normally we can remove a derived signal from its dependencies' dependents when the surrounding effect is destroyed, but if there is no parent effect then we can't do that, which would result in a memory leak. Because of that, dependencies are handled differently and the function body re-runs at different times than it otherwise would. So I'm not sure if this is a bug or slightly-unfortunate-but-works-as-designed.

Got it. Thanks for the response @Rich-Harris . FWIW, things work as intended when you wrap the operations in $effect.root
