at 99% it's a wiring problem.... Be aware if you are using a DB9 male or female, the 1-4-5 can be reverted. In pratice with your RS232, you have 4 four combinaisons to test.

You are welcome! If you want to do me a favor please provide a photo of your rs232 converter + wiring. It looks like a proper connection/wiring is the hardest part of the journey. ;-)

I would like to add something very important.
It looks like after working OK for some time, occasionally my inverter stops sending data. I need to reset the unit to work again. In my case, I have to unplug both solar and grid power.
This is especially relevant if you're trying to make the adapter and you're not getting data, it could also be that the inverter doesn't actually send it so after each try power it off and on again.

But please not my baud_rate is 2400. Changing the baud rate to 9600 doesn't see to change anything. It looks like it's working exactly the same.

This new adapter had a different pinout even though the board is quite similar. I incorrectly assumed the pinout would be the same but GND was switched with TX on this board as opposed with the other board. It's impressive that the chip was powered though.

In conclusion for others reading this thread in the future:
- syssi is the best
- not all adapters actually work. I have one with MAX232 which works.
- try to rotate RX/TX until you get it right.

To be very precise: You are using a MAX3232. This is the 3.3V version of the MAX232. This is important & good because driving a MAX232 with 3.3V is out of spec and driving a MAX232 with 5V leads to a logic level (TTL) of 5V too. The GPIOs of a ESP aren't 5V tolerant.
