Not sure why the maintainers have not documented this but the question seems to come regularly here. It got me too in the beginning. There is an attribute you can set in your .kitchen.yml to turn off using sudo for the docker check.

What is happening is that the driver is trying to run the CLI check as sudo but can't because it is hiding the prompt for the password.

Updating the driver config to be something like this fixed it for me,

driver:
name: docker
use_sudo: false

That fixed it. THANKS!!

I think the default for use_sudo should be false consistently, otherwise it's inevitably confusing. Having the socket location silently switch such a fundamental setting seems weird.

Arguably, it's preferable to add the relevant users to the docker group.

In my case, the user is a member of the docker group, that didn't change anything. I still needed to set use_sudo to false.

I believe updating the error message for the docker check could help people encountering this issue
https://github.com/portertech/kitchen-docker/blob/master/lib/kitchen/driver/docker.rb#L60

Before I discovered the use_sudo attribute I was using a forked version that explicitly passed use_sudo: false to run_command function.
