Are you sure? I just tested and it seems to work for me: switch to horizontal, restart Eclipse, the runner is horizontal. Switch to vertical, restart Eclipse, it's vertical.

I' ve set it to automatic, restarted, then the check was gone. Will try it
again on monday.

I've checked it, and what you said is correct. If you select either horizontal or vertical, the setting is remembered. However, if you set to "automatic", which I did, the setting is not remembered.
