Ok I have done some more research after a while.
It seems that the issue is that the floating numbers in JSON object get decoded as a Double by underlying json parser. That Double value is then fed into the BigDecimal constructor, so there is really nothing we can do about that here.
The solution that worked for us had nothing to do with JsonReader actually, we just called .toPlainString on big decimals where it was necessary ¯_(ツ)_/¯
The other problem that we faced during migration was about the fact that io.circe was able to parse the big decimals from JSON string value, which tethys cannot at the moment.
