I think the user needs to see the search bar as soon as they hit the site. That was one of the biggest strengths on the old TBA.

Searching events is a good idea too, but I think it should take secondary priority to searching team numbers. In an application like my StatsHub http://statshub.heroku.com/ this kind of filtering makes sense because it's intended to be run at a regional for people who want to quickly know their team's stats at that event.

Typing a number into the search box now auto redirects to that team page, if that team exists.
