This patch fix this issue with establish_connection. http://github.com/tchandy/octopus/commit/19d18ba066ec60f2961a8a85faf9ff511b8a4eaf
I'm thinking about a idea to solve this problem.
Can you apply this patch and sees if fix your problem?

This works for me for both the model spec test I committed and for running rake spec in my Rails project.
