Yes, that matches the underlying behaviour of R regular expressions.

I guess my major point is that it str_split diverges from the behavior of strsplit
:
> strsplit('hello', '')
[[1]]
[1] "h" "e" "l" "l" "o"
And from other languages, e.g. in ruby:
>> 'hello'.split('')
=> ["h", "e", "l", "l", "o"]

Oh, hmmm, good point. I could've sworn I tried that in strsplit
and got the same output as str_split
but I must've been dreaming! I'll look into it.
