I agree. It's horribly unsafe to link directly to the master branch, because it's actively developed against and may not even be working from one commit to the next. Having tags will give people something else to link to, something which will not change as more commits are applied.
Most projects tag each release as a part of their standard release procedure. We should too! :)

Okay, took me a bit to get around to it, but v1.3.7 has been tagged, and when we push v2.0 I'll be sure to tag that as well, as well as all "releases" going forward.
