Cannot confirm; works as expected for me. Never mind, because apparently I am not using 7.4!

I was having the same issue and in the end it turned out vim-airline plugin was messing with v:errmsg. I realize that was the reason because doing an :echo v:errmsg in normal mode was giving me E108: No such variable: "w:airline_section_z" instead of an empty string.

Having upgraded to 7.4, I'm not seeing the behaviour described by @amadeus

I'm using 7.4 and the same thing @amadeus said is happening for me as well. Unlike @edmundoa I'm not using vim-airline.

Yeah the current technique is pretty vulnerable to other plugins mucking things up. I've pushed a different strategy to try out.
