Unlike issue #22, this seems to affect :Rename
and :Move
equally.

. When a behavior is debatable I tend to favor matching what Vim itself does.

That's a fair point, even the official vim docs say filetype
is only changed if it's already empty for :saveas
. That doesn't seem particularly logical/helpful to me, but I understand your argument for consistency. Happy to accept closing this if you'd prefer.

On that note shouldn't your example work fine, since there's no built-in file type for *.txt
? I'm struggling to think of many other cases when a file type would change.

Not sure what you mean by "no built-in file type"? If I run :new ~/Desktop/foo.txt
, the vim status bar shows the file as having type "text". I don't think I have any plugins/customisations that are doing that.
But I take your general point about changing file types being rare.
