Note, that the 'linebreak' setting now works with the 'list' setting as of Vim 7.4.353

I think the problem with this is that not everybody uses wrapping...

Yeah there's not really a 'nowrap' conflict. 'linebreak' is basically mandatory in unwrapped plain text but I question how well it would work in code. Plus the way it interacts with 'list' is strange.

BTW it has no effect on gq.

linebreak is bad for code, since it often makes it appear that there are spaces where in fact there are none.

Merits or demerits aside, this option seems like an obvious case of what should NOT be in a neutral vimrc.

Yeah it's not going to happen. It might make a good addition to unimpaired.vim's option toggles.
