Unfortunately, the temporary XDG session directory approach doesn't work as well as I would have hoped. It eliminates this issue but causes a variant of #50 (except that I'm not using Mesa-- I'm using VirtualGL + nVidia.) When typing into the search gadget, the WM (more specifically, gnome-shell) locks up, and the session cannot be recovered. Note that I also tried unsetting XDG_SESSION_ID, which had been recommended on several web sites for solving gnome-shell-related problems with VNC, but that produces an issue whereby unlocking the screen (after the screensaver activates) will cause the authenticator to spin forever.
I give up.

Confirmed that this issue occurs with TigerVNC 1.11 as well, even though it's now using a systemd-friendly startup mechanism for the window manager. That leads me to believe that this is expected behavior with systemd.
