For example, disconnect() would be useful to handle https://dev.twitter.com/docs/streaming-apis/messages#Disconnect_messages_disconnect "Duplicate stream" or "Admin logout" message, where you don't want to just reconnect.

Same problem here with RateTracker threads staying around. I see two possibilities :
1 - ask for a scheduledExecutorService when using the clientbuilder. We could ask for an optional scheduler the same way we ask an endpoint, authentication and so on.. We could then let the developer handle it externally. In my case, when tomcat is shutting down, I want to kill all my executorservices.
2 - just give the BasicClient a shutdown method. A simple clientBase.shutdown() would be enough IMHO.
