What would be the benefit ? Does that allow us to switch storage
backend easily ?

Because being able to switch from file to DB to redis would be nice.
But flat file storage is a requirement, and should not be removed.

You are right it could be a fork.

The benefit is that everything would be handle directly with javascript and static files without any server side configuration.

The Storage Backend is also a good idea.

Oh, so this is an external service ?

Why not, it can have an appeal to people that want an even quicker
setup.

But yes, it should be a fork, as we are currently aiming people with a
strong will on self hosting (zerobin, the initial project, is a
response to all the centralized pastebin service).

If you wish to work it, feel free to reuse the javascript encryption
part.
