I can understand your motivation here, but I would suggest attempting to program against my current API because I think you may find that to not be a problem. Specifically, if you have a class A which you store and load from core data, the json decode function is always an optional A?. When you are decoding, if you expect a string but got a null, then you get back nil from decode. I believe this will be more helpful to you than an empty string.
I also recommend using https://github.com/maxpow4h/swift-gen to generate to and from json functions for types, but currently it's json support is limited. Give me an example and I will try to implement it.
