If we issue an M18 at the end of those procedures, the build plate will fall to the floor on at least some UM2s, including mine. That's not too bad in the case of build plate leveling, "home head", or "lower build plate". It would be a bad idea in the case of "raise build plate", so we'd have to leave the power on then.

On the down side, shutting off the power will let axes drift, which might cause a problem for anyone troubleshooting any homing issues. Right now, for instance, it's nice to be able to ask people via the forums to "hit 'lower buildplate' and then measure your bed height". That would be harder if we had to coach them through hooking up pronterface.

If we do issue an M18 at the end of the above procedures, then I'd be in favor of adding a maintenance menu item to "home and hold" or somesuch, so there'd still be an easy way to tell people to intentionally leave power on.

As an alternative to automatic M18 at the end of these procedures, adding a menu entry to "power off steppers" might make sense instead.

Also, leaving steppers on is consistent with the behavior of at least some of the other maintenance menu items, such as turning on the heaters; people should expect that changing things in there could leave the printer in a hot, power-hungry state.

I'm beginning to veer toward leaving the steppers on by default, but adding the "power off steppers" menu item.

I was just thinking that since all motors home before printing anyway it seems unnecessary to keep them powered.
In normal cases, like after printing, all motors switch off on my machine.

I see your reasoning. I could argue it either way. I'm only about 60% in favor of keeping them powered myself, and that only because leaving them powered helps with troubleshooting.

Dec 2016 the UM2* behavior was changed to be in line with the UM3. Motor power is now released after lowering the bed and after head homing. Raising the bed still keeps the motors powered to prevent the bed from sinking again.
