I think the checkerboard background like the one in your example could be a good solution.

@Sqrrl Not sure whether showing checkerboard for all icons will look good.
Besides that, it will not work for colors, as usually checkerboard is shown only for icons.
I've implemented background changing for cards/colors here.
It solves the problem.
