This happens when there's some unwrappable content like a large image thumbnail that can't fit horizontally into mx_RoomView_messagePanel, whose "overflow-y: auto" causes horizontal scroll to also happen unless you explicitly disable it with overflow-x: hidden.
Given scrolling is better than hidden, we might as well leave it at low priority for now. The best fix would be for the flexbox layout to force the middle panel to push out the whole width of the browser window, but unsure how to do that right now.
