Also, it would be helpful to be able to set an active layer, not just get it. If I end up using this component, I might put in this functionality myself.

Hi! Thanks for contribution. I'm not sure about the version you meant. Plugin has version in package.json https://github.com/vogdb/Leaflet.ActiveLayers/blob/master/package.json#L3 but truthfully it doesn't have any github release. So, what version do you mean?
Also just to note. There is Leaflet/Leaflet#1651 where Leaflet's author thinks about moving plugin's functionality into the Leaflet core.
