logo.js's Introduction

JS Logo By The Community

Officially announced at JSConf EU 2011, but used for almost a year and half prior by the community, we are just going to offer this logo for use with JS projects. If you like it use it, if you don't that's cool too. Just don't complain unless you want to offer a different one, post your alternative to twitter with the tag #jslogo. We are releasing this under a MIT license so you can print it on anything, use it anywhere, and never have to worry about royalties, licenses, and other such things.

This is a gift from JSConf to you, with love!

Also be sure to check the registry for awesome use cases of the logo and what they mean!

Enjoy.

logo.js's Issues

Normalize colors

The rasterized JPEG and PNG images have much paler yellow and dark gray, whilst SVG and EPS are bright yellow and black. Normalizing the colors across versions (well, perhaps not ASCII) would be great.

I suggest the ones my colorpicker gives me for the PNG version: #F0DB4F and #323330.

Change license (again) to WTFPL or CC0

As far as I can see, the license was only changed from WTFPL to the more restrictive MIT license because someone didn't like the name WTFPL in #72.

The thing is that the MIT license isn't a very good fit for a logo because of two reasons:

  • it references "software" (which isn't too bad, SVGs could be considered software)
  • it contains the passage "The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in
all copies or substantial portions of the Software." meaning that every website, t-shirt or sticker that uses the logo is legally required to include the entire license text which obviously isn't feasible.

I guess nobody intends to enforce the latter rule but either way, the WTFPL or the equivalent CC0 are a better representation of how the files in this repository are intended to be used.

Base64 Code

Some people may need base 64 code of the logo.

Change license

Yeah, sure, WTFPL is funny but you are essentially making something public domain so why not use something that doesn't have profane language attached?

Wikipedia mods keep removing the logo

I just tried re-adding it and a mod removed it because it was "totally unofficial".
Is this not the officially preposed logo? Should the logo be on the article? Then again maybe it doesn't belong.

Thoughts?

Add logos to CDN

It would be great to have one CDN with this logos with links to it in readme file.
It would be super easy to find and use them.

A badge that fits with the html5 / css3 badges

I move that there be a JS badge to match the style of the HTML5 and CSS3 badges.

Here's what I came up with based on some other badges and logos that I found:

UPDATED Images (using the logo.js yellow):

I don't claim that my rendition is the best possible rendition, however, if someone with actual design skill would like to improve and reshare, I'd love to see it.

P.S. Aside from my vehement love for JS Strict, the S made sense because the 3 (for ES5 in ES3 Mode) and 5 (for ES5 in plain-old strict mode) were already being used in the other badges.

Why yellow?

I'm just curious... how did the creator of this logo come up with yellow, and that shade of yellow?
