You're correct, there are definitely limitations with this (e.g. not being able to tell Cloudfront to serve the default index.html page in anything except the root path). This is a limitation with Cloudfront, and the workaround seems to be as you've said, to use the bucket's web facing url, and point Cloudfront at the web origin instead of as an S3 origin. See this stackoverflow question.

Nice idea with the configurable bucket name, when I was initially putting together the template, I first made a static site in S3 without Cloudfront, which meant that the bucket name needed to be the url, but now that Cloudfront is in there, it shouldn't be necessary. I'm not sure when I'll get around to adding it though, but in the mean time, you're welcome to fork this repository and tweak it for your needs 😄
