I hacked acts_as_archived.rb as follows, line 71 on:

  if options[:conditions] =~ /\`id\` IN \(/i
    options[:conditions].gsub!(/\`id\` IN \(/i, 'f.id in (') # HACK, from.id
  end
  puts "will move with: #{options.inspect} config[:from] #{config[:from].inspect}, config[:to] #{config[:to].inspect}"

Our problem was we use ar-octopus to proxy our mysql connections to different shards.

In the mover gem, we had to make this change:

change this, line 113:
elsif !options[:generic] && connection.class.to_s.include?('Mysql')

to this:

    # FIX JAW to allow Octopus proxy to mysql to also work.
    elsif !options[:generic] && (connection.class.to_s.include?('Mysql') || connection.try(:config).try(:[], :adapter) =~ /mysql/)

from acts_as_archive.
