The searchform was improved in 30ed7bc
Currently in the develop branch, this will be included in v1.1.11 which will be released later today.
The new searchform looks like this:
The actual width of the searchform in headers can be tweaked by editing the column's width inside the header-grid (see red circle in screenshot below)

I am looking forward to a simple click a search icon and have a search area open. To have a much smaller footer print of the search area seen at all times.
