The danger of mocking would be that subtle (or not so subtle) changes to how svn/git/hg/bzr behave would not be spotted by the tests. Or minor differences in how Mac or Linux handle something. I do think though that the big majority of such fixes that we have done when a newer version of svn/etc came out, were unimportant changes in the tests, so mocking would have helped there.
But sometimes there are changes like this one, where I added some code to fix checking for a tag or tags dir in both subversion 1.6 or 1.7: 23fbf59
from zest.releaser.
