Well, that /tmp/product.name-sdfjksdfsdf directory is a fresh clean clone of your project.
So: the dist isn't ending up in a weird place as such, but rather the whole project is being build in a weird place :-)
There ought to be a prominent log message that tells you the /tmp directory's name. Apparently the message doesn't make clear that the sdist is being created in there?
Would a better log message help?
I quite like the behaviour that a fresh clone is made for creating the release. Or do you see advantages in doing it in-place?

I think a better log message is sufficient... particularly because the screen passes on some output from setuptools/distribute that says:
creating 'dist/product.name-0.2.4.dev0.zip' and adding 'product.name-0.2.4.dev0' to it
I was lead to believe the dist was somewhere nearby ;-) I didn't imagine it would be buried in /tmp

@mauritsvanrees can you take a quick peek at the pull request and merge it once travis is ready with it?
