Just a simple toolbar button? Could be shipped with the next version

Yes. I think it should have the icon currently reserved for the create new folder button. A separate button (folder with a + sign or something different) should be used for creating a new folder.

Yep, I was thinking of this, but fontawesome (which I'm using for the buttons) stupidly doesn't feature such icons, so I'll first have to find a new icon font …

The new font definitely does its job. So button will be added in the next version.
