After further experimentation, I've now realized that I must set a prefix if I have used one to create the snapshot:

sudo zfsnap destroy -nrv -p zfsnap-hourly- rpool

For what it's worth, the documentation here:

http://www.zfsnap.org/docs.html

make it seem like I can use prefixes as a filter, so I assumed that it was optional. It would help to note in the docs that a prefix specification is necessary if the snapshot was created with one.

Thanks rsyring. I was also facing this issue which was not clear to me. This helped me solve my issue!

Thanks; this was also not clear to me. Maybe zfsnap should give an error if you ask it to destroy snapshots which do not exist (because you omitted the prefix)? I would have noticed this problem if I had got such an error during testing.

I was going to file an issue on this fact and that the -P option doesn't seem to work, but I just noticed that this is unmaintained. I did spend a bit of time chasing it down, but debugging shell scripts is not convenient.

Considering what I paid for this, I'm happy that the workaround (multiple invocations with explicit prefix) works.
