I think the correct solution here is probably to probe the connection to ensure it is still connected before attempting to send any request. This should happen on any request that is reusing a connection.

For HTTP 1 there is no real way to do so: you can only try and make a request (i.e. send bytes) and potentially get an EPIPE/ECONNRESET
