Potential other branchless solution
Hey, I read both of your posts about optimizing C code and really liked them.
In part 2: dropping cases, I think the branchless version can be simplified a little (no clue if it improves performance though, maybe C compiler sees across your approach). Maybe also fun to try in ASM?
Here's my variation of that code snippet:

int run_switches(const char *input) {
int res = 0;
while (true) {
char c = *input++;
if (c == '\0') {
return res;
} else {
res += (c == 'p') * -1 + (c == 's'); // probably possible to rewrite this with shifts
}
}
}
I think SIMD can also help with this problem.. maybe time for part 3? ๐
